The Iliad of Homer [from the personal library of Charles E. Duryea, pioneer American automobile manufacturer]

Alexander Pope's translation of the Iliad published by American Book Exchange, New York, 1880, bearing an ink ownership signature 'Chas. E. Duryea' and a printed ownership label for 'M. J. Duryea, 17 Farmington Avenue, Longmeadow, Mass.' Charles Edgar Duryea (1861–1938) co-built with his brother J. Frank Duryea what is generally accepted as the first successful American gasoline automobile, completing it in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1893. The Longmeadow address is consistent with the Duryea family's location in the Springfield area of Massachusetts. The volume is of exceptional interest as a potential personal possession of a founder figure of the American automobile industry.
